Futures vs Retail FX:
I trade both markets, stock index and currency - whichever one
is
showing a clear trade setup at the time. I recommend trading the
currencies via currency futures rather than spot forex (FX). Now that
the CME
exchange has made currency futures electronically traded they
are often a better vehicle than forex because there is no
artificially imposed
bid-ask spread. Some of the spreads in retail forex are too wide. But
in
futures, the market itself determines the spread, which is usually just
1 tick. You only have to pay a small commission to trade futures. The
futures market has more integrity and transparency - all trades, buys
and sells, are matched in one place. Unlike retail forex, where each
firm
displays their own dealing price, which may vary from the prices given
by other firms and banks, according to their own position. In retail
forex
the broker is holding your account and possibly trading against your
position simultaneously (at the futures exchange there are members
trading opposite you, but they don't also artificially set the price*,
nor do they know your position). Basically, there are fewer market
'tricks' in the futures market than in retail forex.
Currency futures closely follow the underlying spot forex price, but
trade
at a different price than the forex. Because of this price difference I
sometimes monitor forex charts (to be aware of key forex price levels)
but
then execute the trade in the corresponding futures market.
Note: futures floor members sometimes will set bid-ask
quotes, but
their quote can be broken if a 'better' bid or offer from an
off-floor trader is placed. This does not happen at most forex firms.
